Vertigo '59 Us Half Sheet

Artist: Saul Bass

Film Description: Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo, the classic 1958 Alfred Hitchcock suspense crime mystery thriller ("Alfred Hitchcock's Masterpiece"; "Based upon the novel D'Entre Les Morts by Pierre Boileau and Thomas Narcejac"; "Music by Bernard Herrmann"; about a man with a fear of heights who is caught up in a murder, or is he?, and he meets a woman who looks very similar to the "dead girl", and he becomes obsessed with solving the mystery) starring James Stewart (Jimmy Stewart), Kim Novak (in a dual role), Barbara Bel Geddes, Tom Helmore, and Henry Jones. Note that John Whitney Sr. (who did the spiral title sequence for the movie) also did the spiral art for the posters from this movie, which was utilized by the poster artist Saul Bass.

Important Added Info: Note that the style B half-sheet has just the Saul Bass artwork, but this style A poster also has the stars at right. Some collectors prefer the poster with solely the art, but because this is a wonderful movie that is remembered as among the best work of both of these stars, many other collectors prefer this style, because that way they get images of the stars in addition to the great art! Most collectors don't realize that Saul Bass did many different designs for this classic movie! All look very similar, with the classic swirl, but the two figures are different on many of the posters!

Overall Condition: very good. The poster was folded once across the middle and twice vertically (on the left and right of the classic Bass art). There are creases in the top and bottom of the right vertical fold, extending into the area to the left and right of the foldline. There are similar creases (but a lesser amount in the top and bottom of the left vertical fold). There is brown staining in the upper right blank border, but it is extremely lucky that the staining in solely in the blank border. Other than the above defects, the poster is in surprisingly quite nice condition!

Anatomy of a Murder '59 US half sheet

Artist: Saul Bass

Film Description: Otto Preminger's Anatomy of a Murder, the classic 1959 Otto Preminger crime courtroom lawyer murder rape thriller ("'Anatomy...'"; "No. 1 Book!"; "No. 1 Movie!"; "Last year's No. 1 best-seller. This year's No. 1 motion picture."; "screenplay by Wendell Mayes from the best-seller by Robert Traver"; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award) starring James Stewart (Jimmy Stewart, in his nominated for Best Actor Academy Award role), Lee Remick, Ben Gazzara, Arthur O'Connell (in his nominated for Best Supporting Actor Academy Award role), Eve Arden, Kathryn Grant, George C. Scott (in his nominated for Best Supporting Actor Academy Award role), Orson Bean, Russ Brown, Brooks West, Murray Hamilton, and Joseph N. Welch ("as Judge Weaver"; the real life judge from the McCarthy hearings who did a great job in this classic movie!)

Important Added Info: Note that the style B half-sheet has a small body silhouette with an added large image above it of the stars behind blinds. Personally, I much prefer this style A half-sheet, which is solely the body silhouette image, surely one of the most famous movie posters images there is! Also note that this poster was never folded! An unfolded poster is almost always far more difficult to find than a folded poster of the same title, and finding unfolded posters in excellent condition is even more difficult!

Overall Condition: very good. The poster was never folded. There are some faint creases, smudges, and small stains scattered throughout the poster. There was a small V-shaped tear in the upper right background area, and someone put a piece of tape on the back of that. The poster has never had any restoration other than the single tape repair.

MAD MAX 2: THE ROAD WARRIOR int'l 1sh '81

Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, the 1981 (released in the U.S. in 1982) George Miller Australian post-apocalyptic action science fiction (sci-fi) thriller sequel ("Just one man can make a difference."; "In the future, cities will become deserts, roads will become battlefields and the hope of mankind will appear as a stranger."; "When all that's left is one last chance, pray that he's still out there ...somewhere!"; "'An Astonishing Action Masterpiece.'"; "Mad Max meets the challenge!"; "Written by Terry Hayes, George Miller with Brian Hannart") starring Mel Gibson (who has recently made major headlines, unfortunately in a negative way, and unrelated to his movie roles!; in the title role), Bruce Spence, Michael Preston, Max Phipps, Vernon Wells, and Dog. Note that this movie was first released in Australia as a sequel to Mad Max, and was titled Mad Max 2. The movie was a giant hit and distributors wanted to release it in the U.S., but since the first movie had only had a very limited release in the U.S., they re-titled it so as to not confuse audiences (but they printed a limited number of "Mad Max 2" one-sheets in the U.S., which are far more rare than the "The Road Warrior" U.S. one-sheets).
Important Added Info: Note that this is an "international" style one-sheet (meaning it was printed in the U.S. for use in non-U.S. countries). Note the lack of a ratings box and NSS information.
Overall Condition: fair to good. There is rippling and discoloration throughout the poster from exposure to moisture and sunlight. There is a large credits snipe across the bottom and there is a rating snipe at lower left.

GAUNTLET 1sh '77

The Gauntlet, the 1977 Clint Eastwood police-corruption crime action thriller ("Clint Eastwood is the man in the middle of 'The Gauntlet'"; "Written by Michael Butler and Dennis Shryack"; about a cop who must bring a witness in against much opposition) starring Clint Eastwood, Sondra Locke, Pat Hingle, William Prince, Bill McKinney, and Michael Cavanaugh
Important Added Info: Note that there were several different printings of this poster, with slightly different arrangements of the credits, and with Sondra Locke's credit being drastically different in size on some of them. A knowledgeable collector tells us that initially Sondra Locke had smaller billing, but "When she saw it, she was irate and insisted that she get equal billing". I do not know if this is true, but it certainly makes sense. So it is likely that the small Sondra Locke credit is from the very first version of the poster and the larger credit is from the second version of the poster, but of course I cannot verify that as being a certainty. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here.
Overall Condition: good to very good.

Apparently Lucy and Desi liked hiring TV actors for their big screen movie!
Overall Condition: good. There are pairs of staple holes scattered throughout the poster with some tears and areas of paper loss and tape repairs on the back of the poster

FIVE MILES TO MIDNIGHT 1sh '63

Le couteau dans la plaie (released in the U.S. in 1963 as "Anatole Litvak's Five Miles to Midnight"), the 1962 Anatole Litvak French/Italian crime thriller ("a motion picture that touches the trigger of violence in all of us!"; "adapted by Peter Viertel from an original idea by Andre Versini") starring Sophia Loren, Anthony Perkins, Gig Young, Jean-Pierre Aumont, and Yolande Turner

BIRDMAN OF ALCATRAZ 1sh '62

Birdman of Alcatraz, the classic 1962 John Frankenheimer Kansas Leavenworth prison convict crime biography melodrama ("Inside the rock called Alcatraz they tried to chain a volcano they called 'The Bird Man'!"; "Based on the book by Tom Gaddis"; the true story of double murderer Robert Stroud, sentenced to life in prison, who after years of anger, adopts a baby bird, and ends up becoming one of the world's foremost bird experts, all done while serving his life sentence in Leavenworth Prison) starring Burt Lancaster (in his nominated for Best Actor Academy Award role), Karl Malden, Thelma Ritter (in her nominated for Best Supporting Actress Academy Award role), Edmond O'Brien ("as Tom Gaddis"), Telly Savalas (in his nominated for Best Supporting Actor Academy Award role), Neville Brand, and Betty Field.

Note that there has always been controversy about the posters for this movie! I have often heard them described as Saul Bass, and they certainly look like they probably were done by him. But, I recently was talking to noted poster expert Dan "The Poster Man" Strebin, and he told me that his understanding is that ALL the posters on this movie were drawn by Bob Peak! Now, of course, the art looks nothing like the Bob Peak we know from later years, and this movie is from a much earlier time than most Bob Peak art, but Dan says that Bob Peak said himself that this was his work. Perhaps at the start of his career he imitated Bass' style. Also note that the window card for this movie, which somewhat resembles the other posters, but has a clearly different image, IS signed by Bob Peak, so it is possible that his artwork was solely used for the window card, and that could explain why he remembers doing a campaign for the movie.
Important Added Info: Note that this poster has a snipe correcting the spelling of Mr. Savalas' first name from "Tony" to "Telly". Also note that we have seen other examples of this poster where the snipe solely covers Mr. Savalas' first name, but this snipe makes his name larger, and also that of Betty Field (we have also seen a third version of this snipe that covers over the name of screenwriter Guy Trosper [who also produced the film]).
Overall Condition: good. There is a snipe in the credits area at bottom. There are creases throughout the poster.

But remember -- they must convict me."; "A man gambles with justice and covers the bet with his life!"; "Because of the terrific suspense please don't tell anyone how this picture ends."; "Story and Screenplay by Douglas Morrow"; about a newspaperman who frames himself for murder to get a great newspaper story, but then the only one who knows the truth dies!) starring Dana Andrews, Joan Fontaine, Sidney Blackmer, Philip Bourneuf, Shepperd Strudwick, Arthur Franz, and Barbara Nichols
Overall Condition: fair to good. There is rippling and discoloration throughout the poster from exposure to moisture. There is writing on the back of the poster that bleeds through to the front in the title area at bottom.

Another love, then what?"; "She tried to blot out her frightening secret in every pleasure spot in the world..") starring Lilli Palmer, Willy Birgel, Carlos Thompson, Ellen Schwiers, and Robert Lindner

Overall Condition: very good.

BLOW OUT 1sh '81
